Sumikko Gurashi made their debut in 2012 as figures that like to hang out in the corner of a room. The characters include “Shirokuma,” a sensitive polar bear, “Penguin?” (with a question mark in its name), a penguin that is unsure if it is really a penguin, “Tonkatsu,” a piece of unfinished pork cutlet, “Neko,” a reserved cat, and “Tokage,” a dinosaur who hides his true nature as one of the last of its kind.

Sumikkogurashi – Good to be in the Corner, the first anime movie, debuted in Japan in November 2019. In the end, 1.22 million tickets were sold for the movie, and as of February 2020, it had brought in 1.4 billion yen ($12.8 million) in Japan. In June 2020, the film earned the Best Animation of the Year prize at the 29th Annual Japan Movie Critics Awards.

Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: The second movie, Aoi Tsukiyo no Mah no Ko (The Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night), debuted in Japan in November 2021 and earned around 250 million yen (about $2.22 million) in its first three days via ticket sales.
