One Piece: Why (and How) the Straw Hats Took a Two-Year Break

The time skip is a shonen manga’s most potent weapon. When used well, a time jump may dramatically alter the setting and cast of a series while also swiftly introducing fresh enemies and storylines without requiring any preparation. One Piece, the enduring shonen juggernaut, is only one of many shonen who have tried, succeeded, and failed. The television show really had its own time jump and executed it well.

In the course of the story, Luffy and his crew of Straw Hat pirates finally took a two-year hiatus and parted ways. They had just arrived in Saobody Archipelago to cover their ship so they could go to the submerged Fishman Island before the Straw Hats split. From there, they would go across the terrible second part of the Grand Line, the New World. However, the Straw Hats never got that far since they ran across the World Government’s Pacafista cyborgs, Sentomaru, the marine, and Admiral Borsalino. Although the Straw Hats give it their all in their battle with Borsalino, they are worn out after just just nearly overcoming the first Pacafista.

But since Borsalino used Devil Fruit, regular strikes merely phased right through his “light” body. Before Rayleigh, the Dark King, showed in and saved them by fighting off Borsalino, everything seemed bleak. The second Pacafista was still a problem for the Straw Hats, however. A highly out-of-character move for the rubber man, but one that highlights how serious the situation is, Luffy orders his crew to disperse and depart after realising that it was pointless to attempt to battle Sentomaru and the Pacafista as they were. Unfortunately, the Pacafistas’ model warlord Bartholomew Kuma shows up on the scene with unknown intentions, which makes matters much worse for the Straw Hats.

The crew’s attempts to flee are ineffective because Roronoa Zoro, one of the crew’s strongest and most devoted members, vanishes from sight at the touch of Kuma’s Paw Paw abilities, terrifying the other Straw Hats. The Straw Hats all gradually appear to “pop” out of existence, leaving just the rubber captain to lament the crew he was unable to rescue. As he did with the Straw Hats, Kuma finally disappears, leaving just the words “we shall not meet again…farewell” for Luffy to remember. One Piece’s team disappears one by one, leaving us to wonder where they’ve gone. It’s without a doubt one of the most difficult scenes to see. It’s somewhat frightening than if they had just passed away.

Separating from His Crew Affected Luffy In Unbelievable Ways

This scenario serves as a warning that things will only become worse for the Straw Hats moving forward. In reality, Luffy loses every fight he engages in after breaking away from his crew, with the exception of the arena fight with the Gorgon Sisters. Magellan confronts him head-on, and he almost dies from the warden’s poison. Without the assistance of his brother Ace, Luffy very definitely would have perished at the hands of Admiral Akainu.

To discover the One Piece, Luffy and The Straw Hats will need more than just determination and good fortune. They are entering the domain of marines and pirates who have decades more training and expertise than any of them. As much as they all wanted to be together, they all realised that they needed to become stronger apart.

To prepare for their reunion on Soabody, Luffy signalled to his crew in a covert message that they should spend the next two years apart. The Straw Hats’ thoughts, however, went beyond just improving their fighting skills. Each of them was also honing abilities relevant to their positions on the ship. The Straw Hats’ doctor, Chopper, made use of the island’s extensive collection of medical and scientific texts as soon as they arrived in Torino Kingdom to broaden his range of medical expertise.

Nami, a cat thief and navigator, spent the two years on Weatheria, an artificial sky island, where she studied the unusual and unpredictable weather patterns of the New World and learned to employ the sky wizards’ cutting-edge weather-manipulating technology. Even the opportunistic Franky cyborg was able to locate the fabled Dr. Vegapunk’s research facility, where he studied the doctor’s science to give himself the ideal cyborg upgrade. The determination Luffy and his crew shown by exercising restraint to remain apart in order to get stronger is what made their final reunion seem so satisfying. It takes more than mere power to survive the New World.
