One Piece Film Red, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Films Top Japan’s Box Office in 2023

On Friday, the Japanese movie website Eiga.com published a list of the top 10 domestic and international films with the biggest box office receipts for 2022. As of December 25, the lists and earnings are up to date.
Even movies that debuted in 2021, such as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which debuted on December 24, are included in the listings of total box office receipts. By the time those rankings were released the previous year, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 had not earned enough to place in the top 10.
Four anime, one live-action manga adaptation, and one tokusatsu film make up the domestic Japanese list. The four anime movies brought in a combined 52.36 billion yen, or around US$395.0 million. That is an increase of 88.1% in revenue over the four anime movies that were in the top 10 the previous year.
Top 10 Japanese domestic box office hits for 2023:
- One Piece Film Red: As of December 25, 18.78 billion yen (about $141.6 million)
- Jujutsu Kaisen 0: $104.1 million (about 13.8 billion yen)
- Suzume no Tojimari: As of December 25, 10.0 billion yen (or roughly $75.4 million)
- 9.78 trillion yen, or around $73.8 million, was spent on Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween.
- Haruka Naru Daichi, Kingdom 2: 5.16 billion yen (approximately $38.9 million).
- Shin Ultraman: 3.55 billion US dollars (or 4.44 billion yen).
- Keiji Senmon Bengoshi, 99.9 The film’s budget was 3.01 billion yen, or $22.7 million USD.
- Yomei 10-nen: 3.0 billion yen ($22.6 million), approximately.
- 2.97 billion yen, or $22.4 million as of December 11, was spent on Chinmoku no Parade.
- JP Eiyhen’s Confidence Man: 2.89 billion yen, or around $21.8 million.
With a revenue of 10.28 billion yen (about $89.5 million at the time), Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time took the top spot the previous year.
