My Dress-Up Darling's Director Shares What Makes Marin So Likable

The director of last year’s blockbuster hit My Dress-Up Darling, Keisuke Shinohara, gave his opinions on Marin Kitagawa’s popularity and likeability.

“She has an interesting personality. The kind of character we’ve never seen before is Marin Kitagawa “he said in a recent interview with Crunchyroll. Kitagawa, a high school student with a passion for anime and popular culture and a desire to become a well-known cosplayer, is the main character of My Dress-Up Darling. She hooks up with Wakana Gojo, a classmate who has a hidden love for producing Hina Dolls, and together they combine his sewing abilities with her enthusiasm and ambition to produce the greatest outfits possible.

The Director Elaborated on Marin’s Charm

Kitagawa’s broad appeal, according to Shinohara, is due to the fact that “She is likeable because she respects both herself and other people. Everyone who has ever been in love can relate to Marin’s tendency to be bashful when it comes to romance despite the fact that she is not afraid to speak her views. She is endearing because of the discrepancy between her outward appearance and her inward state. She has the perfect traits we seek for in a person, especially when you consider how dedicated she can be to anything when she sets her mind to it.”

Both manga readers and anime viewers have responded very favourably to the character’s respect for both herself and other people as well as her enthusiasm and excitement. As of September 2022, more than 7.5 million copies of the continuing manga by Shinichi Fukuda had been sold. When the CloverWorks anime adaptation debuted as part of the winter 2022 anime season, a large number of new fans joined the community.

Naturally, My Dress-Up Instead of only reading the manga or watching the anime to express their love and admiration for the plot, adorable fans build stunning cosplays in the style of Kitagawa and Gojo. For instance, top cosplayer Anari.exe reproduced their Shizuku cosplay and professional model Arisa Chan showed off her version of the Black Lobelia costume.

Despite the story’s emphasis on cosplay, the idea of passion, in Shinohara’s opinion, is not restricted to only costume-making. “The attitude to speak out what you love and change negative into positive even if others taunt you about it is the foundation of [My Dress-Up Darling]. I think the animation successfully conveys that concept “He clarified.
