The sequel to the most popular movie in history falls short of the Japanese basketball animation film. THE FIRST SLAM DUNK maintained its No. 1 ranking for three weekends in a row, earning a still impressive 547 million yen (3.99 million USD) on 365,000 admissions.

The new anime feature film adaptation of Takehiko Inoue’s 1990s sports manga with a basket ball theme has earned 4.189 billion yen (30.5 million USD) in 16 days since its December 3 release, on 2.81 million admissions, making it the sixth best grossing Japanese film of 2022.

Suzume, the most recent movie from Makoto Shinkai, came in second and held that spot for three weekends. The movie made 414 million yen ($3,01 million) on 316,000 admissions on its sixth weekend, raising its total to 9.344 billion yen ($68.08 million) on 6.939 million admissions. It is anticipated that it will cross the 10 billion yen threshold before the year is through.

The long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar, titled Avatar: The Way of Water, made its history-making debut on 1,466 screens in Japan on December 16. It debuted in third place in Japan with a somewhat underwhelming 477 million yen (3.48 million USD) haul from 259,000 admissions over its first weekend. The 192-minute movie was released simultaneously in 135 nations/regions worldwide. Japan becoming the lone nation where it failed to make its No. 1 debut.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is currently in its fourth weekend. The Movie: Scarlet Bond, the second anime feature film adaptation of the Japanese fantasy light novel series by Fuse, dropped two spots to sixth. On more than 800,000 admissions, its cumulative total domestic gross reportedly hit 1.058 billion yen (7.76 million USD). Early in 2023, Crunchyroll will release the movie in all significant international markets (apart from Asia).

That Time I Was a Slime in a Previous Life Scarlet Bond finally surpasses the one billion yen mark for the film.

An all-new feature animation film called Kaguya-sama: Love is War -The First Kiss That Never Ends. That is based on the romantic comedy manga by Aka Akasaka, was released on December 17 in 51 cinemas, where it debuted at number eight. The movie received an average rating of 4.11/5.0 based on 63 reviews, placing it third in Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction list.

Since its premiere on August 6, One Piece Film Red has spent 20 weekends in the top 10, placing ninth overall.
