Yor Forger receives less attention when it comes to character development than the other members of the Spy x Family, despite being the series’ central three.

How Spy x Family Can Improve on Its Biggest Weakness in Season 2

One of the most popular anime series of 2022, Spy x Family is already on on its way to becoming a classic of the genre. This is understandable given that the series, as a whole, maintains a very high level of technical excellence and, more crucially, has public appeal, in large part because of its outstanding core cast. Although many of Spy x Family’s supporting and returning characters are very interesting, Loid, Yor, and of course Anya are the show’s true heart and soul.

To the extent that she has turned into one of the anime’s greatest flaws, Yor is the one of these three main cast characters who often suffers from lacklustre character development. Yor is often portrayed as someone who gradually lacks equity in regard to her husband and relevance in terms of the overall storyline, even though she arguably receives about the same amount of screen time as Loid and Anya, especially in Part 2 of the anime.

Yor Is Portrayed as Being on Uneven Footing With Loid Romantically

While Yor Forger is clearly seen as a charming, sympathetic character in the anime and is treated as a vital component of the Spy x Family’s basic dynamic, her interaction with Loid in particular is far less harmonious. Yor and Loid are both aware that they are in a marriage of convenience, but only Yor seems to feel anything romantically; the other two exhibit true care and concern for one another. When Loid says or does anything overtly amorous, she is depicted being agitated by his attention. In contrast, Loid maintains his composure and makes it apparent in his inner monologue that Operation Strix is his first and maybe only significant priority. He keeps his personal love sentiments for Yor carefully disguised from the public if he has any.

It wouldn’t be difficult to change this component of the show when Season 2 premieres in 2023. It would need very little work or even screen time from the writers to depict Loid sometimes being agitated by Yor, even blushing a bit after an innocent comment or caring action from her. He could even let a cruel remark or hurtful story from a gossiping neighbour cause him to temporarily lose his calm and controlled appearance. This kind of moment, however brief and uncomplicated, would demonstrate Loid’s concern for Yor, not just because of her significance to his goal but also because he is coming to adore — and yes, fall in love with — her personally, just as Yor is suggested to be for him.

Yor’s Job as an Assassin Takes a Back Seat to Her Duties as a Wife and Mother

Yor's Job as an Assassin Takes a Back Seat to Her Duties as a Wife and Mother

Yor was first brought to Spy x Family as the famed assassin known as the Thorn Princess, executing her targets (often unsavoury) with efficiency and ruthlessness, but this element of her character has gradually fallen to the wayside in favour of her responsibilities as a wife and mother. In fact, viewers are far more likely to witness Yor cooking (or at least trying to cook), conducting routine home chores, or caring for her adoptive kid than they are to see her working at her cover job as a clerk at Berlint City Hall. Of course, there is nothing wrong with Yor being portrayed as a motherly figure and a carer, and like Loid, she is also acting in this way to allay any suspicion on the part of the government or unwelcome attention. However, her responsibilities as a housewife have gradually gained priority.

This may change in Season 2, which will include more of Yor’s assassin character and/or make it more significant to the overall plot of Spy x Family. For instance, although the effects of Loid’s espionage on Operation Strix and the interactions between Westalis and Ostania are constantly explained to the audience, the effects of Yor’s killings on the political landscape are far less clear. However, merely adding more variety to Yor’s inner monologue may be a significant improvement for the programme. It would be satisfying to have Yor’s internal discourse divert further from her worries about being an unsatisfactory mother or wife since Loid and Anya both have rather deep inner lives.

Spy x Family is an extraordinarily good anime with a sizable fan following, and it has gained its notoriety because to a variety of factors including its adorable, witty, and engaging cast. Even while Yor Forger is already one of the franchise’s most well-liked characters, there is still space for growth. Spy x Family may stand to win even more goodwill as the second season of the programme approaches by making sure Yor’s character is given the same level of care and consideration as Loid’s and Anya’s.
