Ghost in the Shell: Why the Individual Eleven Isn’t as Successful as the Laughing Man

Ghost in the Shell: Why the Individual Eleven Isn’t as Successful as the Laughing Man

Even if the Individual Eleven narrative still has an impact, The Laughing Man is Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex’s most effective foe.

Ghost in the Shell: Why the Individual Eleven Isn't as Successful as the Laughing Man

Because it stays true to the formula while spending enough time creating a rich cyberpunk setting and complex cast of characters, Stand Alone Complex is undoubtedly the best adaptation of the Ghost in the Shell series. With the exception of its evolution over a few famous sequences in the first movie, Section 9’s appearance in Stand Alone Complex is in many ways its most memorable. The main plots of both seasons evolved into distinctive and noteworthy cyberpunk tales that had an effect on the characters and spectators.

The first season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is known for the Laughing Man’s terrifyingly plausible crimes and distinctive imagery. Any plot would have a hard time following the Laughing Man arc. Ghost in the Shell did an excellent job with the more emotionally complex Individual Eleven narrative in Season 2. Despite the deep character moments, however, Individual Eleven fell short of capturing the Laughing Man’s mystique and sympathetic dread.

The Imagery of Laughing Man Is Unforgettable; The Individual Eleven Are Forgettable

The Imagery of Laughing Man Is Unforgettable; The Individual Eleven Are Forgettable

The Laughing Man was given a basic yet unique design to make their presence remembered. Ghost in the Shell’s intricate and mostly realistic environment is the appropriate backdrop for the clean, flat smiling face, which stands out in sharp contrast. Even though the Individual Eleven has a moving sign, it lacks the clarity and contrast of The Laughing Man’s, which makes it simple to forget.

The Laughing Man had a larger physical presence than the Individual Eleven, but their identities and influence on the world seemed insignificant. It seemed like the world was being fundamentally changed by the acts of hacking and terrorism, thus highlighting media and chat room coverage and worrying over the Laughing Man gave their influence some real weight. Even while the intricacies of Stand Alone Complex Season 1 become less apparent with time, some elements of the Laughing Man are still quite recognisable.

Gouda and the Individual Eleven Impact Is Too Twisted and Too Big to Feel Relatable

Gouda and the Individual Eleven Impact Is Too Twisted and Too Big to Feel Relatable

It seems like a supervillain strategy to manipulate people into becoming revolutionaries by inciting social unrest against the authorities and refugees and using the chaos to establish a new regime. It is hard to relate to Gouda and his objectives, despite the fact that certain people may find aspects of nationalism or individuality appealing. Gouda loses all relatability when his evil plan is exposed and causes a rift between him and his willing sacrifice, Kuze.

The tale of Hideo Kuze’s tribulations gave the Individual Eleven a deeper emotional appeal. Kuze was fascinating and endearing since he knew he defeated the computer virus and followed the noble objective of assisting refugees, even if doing so made him the ideal atonement for Gouda. However, he doesn’t exhibit these advantageous qualities until he separates from the Individual Eleven, the central component.

Laughing Man Feels Like a Possible Future Threat

Laughing Man Feels Like a Possible Future Threat

Although terrorist attacks and refugee problems are sadly widespread worldwide, Gouda’s super-villainous schemes seem like something out of a James Bond movie. The Laughing Man, on the other hand, comes across as all too real and current. With easy access to information and a lack of reliable sources, misinformation, fake news, and lying politicians have grown in importance over the past 20 years. Hacker activists and terrorists are more prevalent as a result of this corruption.

It is not difficult to imagine a hacker or group of hackers emerging and establishing a presence akin to the Laughing Man given the expanding networks, AI technology, and public fear of all political parties. Although human brains are not yet networked, the number of things that can be connected to a network is increasing dramatically every year, meaning that humans may eventually have more technological advancements, making them more susceptible to hacking. The Laughing Man serves as a wake-up call and a cautionary tale about something that is all too probable but largely avoidable.

Both seasons of the classic cyberpunk novel Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex are intensely entertaining and thought-provoking. However, the Individual Eleven story felt less moving and triumphant than the Laughing Man tale because of the overtly cartoonish element of Gouda’s plot and presence. Even Ghost in the Shell’s weaker plots seem deserving of analysis or appreciation given the likelihood of additional cyberterrorism and internet-based attacks or manipulation.
