A film of animated anime toys from Dragon Ball, Ultraman, and other series coming to life was released by stop-motion artist Kenta Shinohara as a farewell to 2022.

In a stunning stop-motion presentation, characters from famous anime shows like Dragon Ball, Ultraman, and others come to life as toys.

A compilation video honouring stop-motion artist Kenta Shinohara’s favourite anime films from 2022 was made. Shinohara’s most recent movie, which is accessible via the artist’s official TikTok account, includes figures from several well-known series, including Dragon Ball, Demon Slayer, Ultraman, One Piece, Re:Zero, and many more. The soundtrack for the somewhat more than two-minute film is “Parade der Zinnsoldaten.”

Shinohara, who worked on TV advertisements for Netflix’s Rilakkuma and Kaoru, has also reenacted beloved anime episodes using the franchise’s official toys. Shinohara animated the famous Shotaro Kaneda motorcycle-sliding sequence from Akira on September 8, 2021. The video was difficult to produce even though it was just 30 seconds long. The motorbike toy used for the photo was hefty, as Shinohara noted on his YouTube channel, making it challenging to pull off the wheelie. The car’s headlights were battery-operated as well and switched on and off every five minutes.

A Successful Stop-Motion Career

The classic motorbike scene from Akira was recreated by 4-year-old Mei from My Neighbor Totoro on August 11, 2022, as part of Shinohara’s revisiting of the film. The video is a touch ironic since Mei watches Shinohara’s own interpretation of the sequence before learning how to do the Akira bike slide. There are also cameos from previous Studio Ghibli films, such the Laputian Robot from Castle in the Sky and the No-Face from Spirited Away.

Although stop-motion animation is less popular than computer animation, it is still widely used in the field. Dwarf Studios, who also worked on Rilakkuma and Kaoru and Rilakkuma’s Theme Park Adventure, created the stop-motion animation for the Beastars Season 1 opener. Fans and journalists alike gave Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio on Netflix amazing ratings. In a behind-the-scenes film made available by Netflix, del Toro explains why he decided to adapt Pinocchio using stop-motion animation. The director said that “animation has become, in the imaginations of the customers, a genre.” But animation is also an art form, and stop-motion is, in my opinion, the most revered and mystical of them all since it emphasises the relationship between the animator and the puppet.
