Anime Films Bring in the Box Office Money in Japan Making Up Four of the Top Five Movies of the Year 2023

As the year comes to a close, the Japanese movie website Eiga has tallied the box office results from 2022 and discovered that, of the top five movies that were released in Japan in the previous year, four of them were anime movies, with One Piece Film Red taking the top spot and Top Gun Maverick coming in at number five.
Top 5 movies in Japan at the box office in 2023
- One Piece Film Red, which cost 18.78 trillion yen (US$134.04 million).
- JUJUTSU KAISEN $112.15 million or 13.8 billion yen
- Top Gun Maverick, priced at 13.5 trillion yen ($100.45 million).
- Suzume, 10.01 trillion yen ($72.74 million), is the fourth.
- Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween, which earned 9.78 trillion yen (US$74.45 million).
Eiga claims that although box office revenue in 2022 increased by 140% over that in 2021, it was still only 90% of the typical five-year period prior to the COVID-19 epidemic. The surge is attributed to the popularity of anime films, which shot up significantly from the previous year, when Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time held the top rank with 10.28 billion yen. Three anime movies have reached the 10 billion yen mark only this year alone, including the December 24, 2021 release JUJUTSU KAISEN 0.
Remember that the Japanese box office year runs from December of one year to the end of the next year. Due to this, even though THE FIRST SLAM DUNK and Avatar: The Way of Water both met the criteria to be in the top 10 of their respective lists, they were omitted and are most likely to be on lists of the highest-grossing movies in 2023.
